Anxiety and depression are two of the most common reasons people seek counseling and can often also occur at the same time. The good news is both are highly treatable.
ANXIETY
Occasional anxiety can be a normal, even healthy, part of life. It can also crossover into causing real problems in your life.
Common symptoms include:
feeling on edge or restless
difficulty concentrating
irritability
increased muscle aches or soreness
difficulty sleeping
These are the ways I hear my clients describe their anxiety:
“I feel like I worry about everything all the time.”
“I am always thinking of what could go wrong.”
“ I can’t shut my brain off.”
“My body feels tight a lot of the time.”
Therapy can help you understand the sources of your anxiety and build on new skills to feel more confident and at ease in your life.
Depression
It’s okay not to feel happy all the time. We’re not meant to feel happy all the time. However, if you notice you feel down most of the time this is an important warning sign to pay attention to.
Common symptoms include:
feeling empty
feeling hopeless
loss of interest in usual activities
changes in sleep or appetite
fatigue or tiredness
difficulty concentrating
thoughts of death or self-harm
These are the ways I hear my clients describe their depression:
“I just don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“I don’t want to do anything.”
“I’m always tired.”
“I feel empty . . .like there’s not point to anything.”
Therapy can help you understand your depression and build on new skills to get you unstuck from this painful experience.
